Start Up Delay

I'm using XP Home edition. Every time I start up my
computer, it hangs for about 90 seconds before completing
start up. I checked the event log, and there are
recurring Event ID 1001 logs. I suspect that this delay
is some sort of timeout mechanism, maybe related to a
search for a Network connection or some such issue. Can
this function be turned off on start up? Or is there
some other issue that might be at work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Event ID 1001 covers a lot of territory. Can you provide
the Event Source as well? This usually helps to try to
narrow the scope of the event.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

The Event Source is Dhcp.

How do you connect to your ISP?
Through a Network Cable plugged into a router that gives you an IP (the
router gets its IP from the ISP) or from a Network Cable plugged directly
into the Cable Modem/DSL modem(or through a switch/hub) - so you get an IP
directly from your ISP? Or possibly through a USB connection?

Shenan, I believe the IP is assigned by my Internet
provider. My Network cable goes from my computer to a
hub (which I use to network my home computers). Another
cable goes from that hub to an ADSL router. I am not
automatically connected when I turn on the computer. I
first need to run a little applet which logs me in,
verifies me, and connects me to the ISP.

Here is the description from the error log:

"Your computer was not assigned an address from the
network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with
network address 444576547. The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer
will continue to try and obtain an address on its own
from the network address (DHCP) server."

I'm not sure if that's the log referring to the problem
in question, but it sounds like it, since it appears each
time I start up.
