Start Up and Desktop

When I boot up, I get to my normal desktop with normal icons,s but
also shown is a spam message (?) - Warning - Spyware Threat has been
detected on your PC...Click here to scan your PC for spyware.

I am reluctant to do this.

Is this something I can correct with Msconfig and Start Up. If so, pls
guide me through this - not too familiar in this area.

Thanks

Thanks.. I am running Webroot's SpySweeper but will run the two programs
yousuggest.

I should have said that during the boot up process before I get to the
Desktop, I get two error messges on my screen; first, Windows-No Disk.
Exception processing message with a long number...I have three choices to get
by this, and I select Continue. A second messge appears with I think a
different long number and I have to hit continue to get past this.

Is this any help"

Thanks

I would try Spybot S & D -there is a freeware version buried in this
link:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

A safer way than msconfig to remove unwanted start up items is to use
Autoruns.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,
or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck
you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than
editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that
you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information
about the item selected.

To get the best advice on Error messages you need to post an exact copy
of the message from Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
