I recently installed a new virus program on my laptop and now when I start
the computer there is no start menu or program icons just blank wallpaper.
Obviously this results in not being able to use the laptop. Any help would be
appreciated.Thanks

I hope you mean anti-virus program? What program is it? Open task manager
by pressing Ctrl-Shift-Esc, and start a new task of explorer.exe. On the
applications tab click on new task, type in explorer.exe. Do the taskbar,
start menu and desktop icons now appear? If so uninstall that new program
from add/remove programs then do a system restore to the time right before
you installed it.

Hit the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys at the same time.
This should bring up Task Manager.
In Task Manager, click on the File menu and select New task.
Enter explorer.exe in the Open box.
Click OK.

If you now have access to your Start button, run System Restore
(Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System
Restore) and see if you can restore your laptop to a time
before this problem happened.

If the taskbar is still unavailable, run Task Manager again and
this time when you launch the "Create New Task" box, hit the
Browse button and navigate to this location.

C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Once again, see if you can use System Restore to take your
laptop back to a time before you installed the AV program.

Good luck

I've tried both of your suggestions and I can't get past the Task Manager
with either way.

I installed Trend Micro AntiVirus 2007.I can't get past task manager,it's not
responding to explore.exe

You wrote "explore.exe" but it's explorer.exe. Did you try running the
right one? Have you contacted Trend Micro's tech support?

If that doesn't work restart and see if it will boot and load ok in safe
mode. To enter safe mode as the computer restarts and the BIOS splash
screen disappears repeatedly tap the F8 key to get the Advanced Options
menu. From there highlight safe mode and press enter.

Hi, I would try putting system into safe mode and remove the anti-virus
software you installed. I would check after uninstalling to see if you have
any other antivirus software installed and remove it. Then try and do a fresh
install.

If you have more than 1 antivirus program, they do not play nice and can
cause a great big headache :) Lesson Learned

Thanks-I tried and can't get into safe mode to do anything either-guess it's
off to the Geek Squad.

Thanks Rock but I can't do anything in safe mode either-I'll try and get in
contact with the anti-virus people or it's off to the Geek Squad.

You haven't confirmed if you tried running explorer.exe to start the task,
not explore.exe as you wrote.

What do you mean you can't do anything in safe mode? What happens in safe
mode? Did you try running explorer?

Try Safe Mode with command prompt. At the command line give the command:
c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

If this opens the system restore GUI, then do a system restore to before
Trend was installed.

I wouldn't suggest use of the Geek squad. Contact Trend Micro Tech support.
If still no go do a repair install. Here is a link on how to do it. You'll
need to revisit windows update to get all the updates.

Before doing anything else is there a full and complete backup of important
data? If not, do that first, and if you need some tips on how to do that
with the system not bootable post back.
