My start button and task bar have disapeared, they are not minimized or
anything. I thought they might be behind the desktop but try as I might I
can't seem to find them.. All the help topics that I have loked through have
always started with "click Start". I can't click Start because I don't have a
start button. Please can someone help me with this.

What happens if you press the Windows key or use Ctrl+Esc to bring up
the Start Menu?

Hi

Try a System Restore back to a point before the problem started.

Has it disappeared in Safe Mode as well?

It might have shrunk to zero lines high. Move your mouse cursor to to the
very bottom of the screen and wiggle it up and down slightly, trying to make
it turn into a two-headed aroow. If it does, click and drag it upward to the
size you want.

If that doesn't work, it may have also been moved to another side of the
screen. Try the same on the other three sides.

Finally, if none of those work, go to
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm, click T, then under Taskbar,
click Taskbar is Missing.

It will not recover your desktop START button, but
the quick and dirty cure is to get a keyboard with
a Windows button. For example Logitech customizable
Windows KBs, with extra buttons (preconfigured for
email, My Documents etc.) are widely discounted for
about $10.

Just replying to my own post because it might be helpful to someone else:) I
appear to have solved my problem, my start up menu and task bar is back, for
some reason I think my computer had gone into sleep mode, or anther sota
mode, I have never used sleep mode or any other mode so I didn`t know until I
checked my computer manual to see why the start button was flashing red, even
when I had unplugged it from the wall socket, so, it was running on the
battery, my desperate mind told me to remove the battery to get the computer
to completly turn off, I loosened the battery, the light went out, I
tentivley re-started my computer and that scary black page with white writing
came up to say that my computer hadn`t closed down properly, do I want to
start in "safe mode" but i allowed it to start in "normal" mode and hey
presto!! my desk top came up with everything there, phew! so a bit of a
brainless thing to happen lol now I`m lef wondering how my computer managed
to go into sleep mode without me clicking on "sleep mode" or any other mode.

Right click on any empty part of the Taskbar and select
Properties. The toggle box you want is at the foot of the
first window (Taskbar.)

Under WinXP, whenever in doubt, RC and / Properties often
offers the menu you want.
