Hi all,
I am having problems with the Start Menue in Vista Ultimate. Until today,
everything worked fine. When I click on Control Panel or Windows Updates
and other things on the Start Menu it pops up on the screen for a fraction
of a second and then disappears. Is anyone else having this problem and if
so do you know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance,
Alice

Restart in Safe Mode and run a full system scan with your antivirus utility
and antispyware utility if you have one installed.

I too am having problems similar to yours.

My Start menu seems to be OK but if something has something to do with the
control panel then it simply doesn’t work. I can’t even get the control panel
to load, and all functions associated with the control panel don’t work. If
anyone has any idea on how to fix this it work be muchly appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks but I already did that. Nothing shows up. Clean! Do you have any
other suggestions=

Thanks for your help,
Alice

Hi Brats,
Did you happen to update a Nvidia driver lately. I don´t even have Aero
anymore.

Can you do a System restore point to an earlier point in time before you
started experiencing this problem? If that does not work, try the following:

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories and right-click
on the Command Prompt and choose "Run as administrator".
Type in: SFC /SCANNOW and press your Enter key.

If that does not work, try repairing your system. Boot from your Windows
Vista DVD, select the System Repair Option > on the setup screen, select
'Repair Computer > Select your installation of Windows > select Startup
Repair option and follow instructions.

I've reinstalled my Vistas 3 or 4 times for reasons unrelated to Vistas but
rather XPs on other partitions, bad USB controllers (I've had this problem
with all OSs) and I remember that at the second install (that worked for
about 3 months) I had this problem occasionally when a great deal of
software overload was present. I mean, when I would download a package,
surfing the net at the same time, editing something, etc.

What I did was this:

Ctrl+Alt+Del Logoff User, login again and it clears everything.

I do not know if it has any relevance, just FYI.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

I dont believe a Nvidia driver has been updated recently - i havent been
able to do any Manual windows updates since this problem started - i have
also noticed that my Aero isnt working either and i have started getting
notifications from microsoft that my windows isnt genuine. Now i remember
reading somewhere on this website that all these problems are because of one
main issue that windows have a fix for but i have yet to find it - will let
you know when i do - or it would be great to direct us in the right
direction. Good Luck
