Start menu highlighting

I can't get rid of the highlighting on start menu items after installing
new software on a new HP laptop. This seems to have started after
installing Ofiice 2000 premium. Running the program pointed mostly
doesn't work, though the "New programs" ballon goes away.

Any ideas?

Right click Start menu button > Choose Properties > Click Customize >
Advanced tab > Uncheck "Highlight newly installed...."
