Start Menu & Desktop Shortcuts

I would like my desktop to be clear of all shortcut icons and just to
use my start menu to access my programs but if I delete my desktop
icons I cant access my programs. Can someone shed some light on this
please?

Do not the programs appear in Start, Programs?

You can't access your programs ?
- no start menu item for them ?
- there is a start menu item but that doesn't start the program ?
- then : do you get an error message ?
- What programs ?
