Start Bar won't work on XP

I installed Pest Patrol on my computer and after running a
scan, I accomplished the recommended deletion of pests.
Now when I start my computer, the desktop comes up - but I
can't do anything from the Start bar. I can run programs
that have shortcuts on my desktop. I tried several
restores. but none of them were successful. I disabled
all programs in my start up menu (using Safe mode) but
that didn't help.

I think I deleted a file I shouldn't have. Any ideas?

Item No. 195 (right column), click on "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar".

Install the registry fix, then reboot your computer.

I came here with the same problem. Wonder if something is
going around. I have no start button, in fact the whole
bottom bar is missing. Tried the usual things and nothing
worked. Maybe we can get some super geek (I'm just a
normal geek) out there to help us both.
