Recently upgraded to xp.

Start/Shut Down Computer takes me to a "shut down" screen - but STANDBY is
the default.

1) This seems to indicate that STANDY is preferable to SHUTDOWN. Is this
true? Why?

2) How can I get SHUTDOWN to be the default? (If going to BIOS is required,
please remind me of the F-key)

Many thanks!

depends on your PC, standby may be faster than shutdown. so is bringing Xp
from standby.

If you need speedy start, find out which one is faster and then use it.
However, it is wise to shutdown once in a while ( about once in a week
depends on your usage) to avoid problem.

Also bear in mind standby will cost your electricity $

Actually, I think that "hibernate" is the best option (bearing in mind that
one should very definitely re-boot the computer every 3, 4 or 5 days (so that
memory leakage etc can be disposed of).
To get hibernate: go to control panel > Power options > Hibernate tab.

Ensure Enable Hibernate is checked and then go to the Advanced tab.

On the ddvanced page select "hibernate" from the "When I press the power
button on my computer: options button.

When hibernating, the PC stores everything active on the HDD and then when
coming out of hibernation it retrieves it to the desktop/memory. It's much
quicker than waiting for all of the drivers to be loaded when booting
normally.

Thanks, Patience.
This is a laptop, and I frequently unplug it to hit the road.
What happens then, in any ot these scenarios?
