standby problems

I have a new computer (P4-2800HT, Intel D865GBF, ATI All-in-Wonder 9800 Pro)
with XP Pro, all updates installed. I have three standby problems:
1) The sleep button properly initiates standby mode, and the computer
properly resumes from standby in response to the mouse or keyboard.
However, the computer spontaneously awakes from standby within a few
minutes.
2) The computer does not automatically enters standby mode (set for 20
minutes idle time) or automatically power down the disk (set for 30 minutes
idle time).
3) The computer shuts down the monitor if the power settings specify 3
minutes idle time, but not if the settings specify 15 minutes idle time.

Is there an easy way to find out what is interfering with standby mode?

Thanks,
Gary

Check in your BIOS setup to see if that has any 'Wake on' settings
enabled - eg on Modem or LAN, or even a timer.

There was a problem at one time with IDE drivers and standby interacting
in rather that way - but it was cleared in SP1

Do you know of an easy way to ascertain what is preventing the automatic
standby (especially regarding the monitor)? There's a diagnostic program
(pmtshoot) for Win98 standby; is there anything analogous for XP?

Thanks,

For all standby or shutdown problems, first port of call is the
extensive troubleshooter at James Eshelman's page:
specific XP section at
www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Best bets are drivers, or some resident 'utility' programs of the Norton
type, that are known not to reinitialise after a standby.

Thanks for the pointer. The trouble is, though, that I've already spent far
too much time trying to figure out why standby mode hasn't worked properly
on any of the eight PCs I've owned over the past decade. The OS ought to be
able to log any event that resets the idle time or wakes the computer, which
would make it easy to see what causes the problem. So I was just wondering
if any existing software provides that information.

Thanks,
Gary
