How much power does standby mode actually save for a desktop system (not
laptop)?. Would it be better for me just to shut the monitor and speakers
off?

This is not really a Windows XP issue. This is more of a power consumption
issue.

If you are concerned about power - you should get a device that helps you
measure where power is actually being wasted and where it is not.

In any case - your answer will not lie here (although I am sure someone will
answer it with their opinions) but you would be better served doing a little
research (Google, etc.) on the subject matter.

A quick search or two:

Good luck, good reading! Confirm everything, read both sides.

Only an ammeter (between the PC and its power source) can
measure power consumption accurately. It seems unwise to
suppose all brands of PC use the same amount of power,
whether running or on standby.

No matter what you do, hear, read, purchase or try, there is only one
way to be 100% sure you are not "wasting" any electricity.

Shut the thing and everything connected to it off (except maybe your
UPS).

Put it all on one power strip and flip the switch when you are done.
