Stand Alone DoubleSpace Utility

Jim Byrd

Hi All - Maybe this group of freeware guru's can help me to locate a stand
alone type utility which will operate under Win2kPro to mount and open
(decompress) DBLSPACE.000 files on an Iomega 100 MB external parallel port
ZIP drive disk. The drive is installed OK and functions normally - the
problem is that there's a flock of "old" Win95/98 era ZIP disks which have
been compressed with DoubleSpace which is no longer native to Win2k. What
I'm looking for is something similar to the WinXPVirtualCDControlPanel
utility which is used to mount and then open ISO's. Any help/leads would be
much appreciated - even if you know of one that may cost, I'd appreciate it
if you'd de-mung my email addy and send me any info available, or if free,
then of course please post here. TIA

Never heard of such an animal. If I was in your shoes I'd try
low-tech: visit bootdisk.com to create an MS-DOS 6 or Win95
command-line floppy, then http://www.iomega.com/software/index.html
for a zip drive driver appropriate to the matching OS and zip drive
type. Reboot from the floppy, load the iomega driver, and use command
line XCOPY to copy the zip disks' contents to a FAT32 hard drive
partition. Worth a try, anyway.

Hi Mark - OK, thanks anyway. That is the alternative using 6.22 which I
have available, but I just hoped I might avoid the work. :) Oh, well!

This directory contains documents and source code to describe and
illustrate the format of the DoubleSpace compressed volume file (CVF)
and the use of the DoubleSpace System API.

filenames.

DMSDOS reads and writes compressed DOS filesystems (CVF-FAT). The
following configurations are supported:

* DoubleSpace / DriveSpace (MS-DOS 6.x)
* DoubleSpace / DriveSpace (Windows 95)
* DriveSpace 3 (Windows 95 with Plus! pack)
* Stacker 3
* Stacker 4

It works with FAT32, NLS, codepages (tested with fat32 patches
version 0.2.8 under Linux 2.0.33 and with fat32 in standard 2.1.xx
kernels and 2.0.34+35). Dmsdos can run together with vfat or umsdos
for long filenames. It has been redesigned to be ready for SMP and
should now compile completely under libc6.

Thanks very much, Mel. I'll take a look - this may be just the ticket. :)
