SSL Email - use a Secure POP3 Connection

B

Bill

I want to use SSL to connect to my POP3 server. Now, I know that Outlook
2000 supports SSL with the Accounts > Advanced checkbox options of "This
server requires a secure connection (SSL)". However, my Web Host Provider
doesn't support SSL email on shared servers.

My question is this: let's say my pop3 server is:
POP.MYDOMAIN.COM

on the POP3 port 110. Now, what if I enable SSL on my domain, and then edit
my DNS record so that the SSL record

SSLPOP.MYDOMAIN.COM

directs to (non-SSL) POP.MYDOMAIN.COM on port 110?

Sp, my computer has an SSL connection to SSLPOP.MYDOMAIN.COM, which then
has an unsecured connection to POP.MYDOMAIN.COM. My email flying over my ISP
is secure.

Is this doable, or am I missing a step here?

Then you can't do this.

Not sure what you mean by "on your domain" - you don't have a mail server,
right? Just a registered Internet domain?
then edit my DNS record so that the SSL record

SSLPOP.MYDOMAIN.COM

If there's no POP/SMTP server located at sslpop.mydomain.com this won't make
any difference. The mail server you're pointing to doesn't support SSL.

You'll need to find an ISP that supports encrypted connections to their
server.
