Spyware, Fatal Errors, Reinstall XP, Oh My!

Help me pleaseeee! Lately my computer has been swarmed
with spyware, whenever I scan with Adaware, I get rid of
it all, the minute I restart, it all comes back! Spybot
Search and Destroy always freezes on me. So I used them
both and scanned in safe mode, they both worked. I start
my computer back up in normal mode. I still am getting
pop-ups!!! Internet explorer still comes up with those
stupid annoying fake Microsoft error messages and my home
page keeps changing and when I type any wrong address in,
I get a fake search page STILL! HELP! And also!
Everytime I start Windows up, I get an error message
saying C:\Program is missing and messages saying
javaob32.exe and netff.exe performed illegal operations
and need to close. Sometimes they keep popping up
everytime you click Send, or Don't send and you need to
reboot hoping next time they won't. And also, Explorer
always encounters a problem and needs to close on start-
up too! It happens whenever the sound tray icon or the
networking tray icons start up I've figured out. WHY IS
MY COMPUTER SO MESSED UP?!!! Should I just reinstall
Windows XP? Nothing is working! HELP MEEEEE!!!!!!
AAAAHHH!!! Okay I'm calming down.

Did you recently download or resubscribe to NAV?

Check your system for "hijackware":

Help with Hijackware
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.winfavorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup > More options > Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

Personally, I would reinstall Windows if things were that messed up. But
that's me; I don't mind installing Windows and have done it many times. You
might not be comfortable with the idea. But if you are and want to go on
that adventure then go fo it.

But when you do install Windows, please patch immediately through Windows
update. Thereafter have auto-updating turned on.

Also, please set your Internet Zone to High and your Trusted Zone to medium
(at least) and only add sites to your Trusted Zone if you need to and if the
site seems credible. When SP2 comes out you may want to allow scripting in
the Internet zone but maybe not ..

On top of all that, install a virus scanner and don't open attatchments sent
to you. Make sure your email software is set to the Restricted Zone (which
should be set to high security) and don't download and install every toolbar
and widget that's offered to you (be very selective).

At least turn on Windows firewall for your Internet connection or get Zone
Alarm or BlackIce.

But that's about it (patch, anti-virus, higher Interenet security, no open,
selective, firewall).

Your surfing will be a little more circumspect but your machine should stay
clear of malware.

I have almost the same problem. If you get yours fixed,
please share. My only problem now is cws keeps coming
back, even just loging on to msn and then logging off and
doing adaware search they are back.
