Hi, my Webroot Spysweeper license is about to expire and I'd like to
know if I should pay to renew it, or if there is a more effective
product (in rooting out malware) out there. There's so much hype
and misinformation about these things that I don't know what to do. I
believe our experts on this board are unbiased, so all help
appreciated.

I don't use that program so I can't comment on it's effectiveness or whether
it's cost effective. There are a variety of free programs such Adaware,
which has a new release this month, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender,
SuperAntiSpyware, BHO Demon, SpywareBlaster, HiJackThis, and AVG
Anti-Spyware, to name some. If your goal is to keep your system clean, then
running a combination of these free programs and practicing safe hex should
do fine.

I have a free subscription to Spysweeper (AT&T Worldnet subscriber). I
use it, but it does slow down my machine a little so once my "free"
status expires I will uninstall it. Spydoctor is another good one.
You can do without paying another subscription by using free Spybot
Search and Destroy and activate Teatimer, plus running free Lavasoft
Adware. The beauty of free utilities is that they work just as well
and don't expire nags to deal with.

I have a paid subscription to Spysweeper but don't use it any more. It is a
CPU hog. AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and SuperAntispyware are enough,
not to mention WD, Spyware Doctor, and Spyware Blaster. And I have AVG
antivirus and antispyware also. I guess I'm covered. (Way over-covered
actually.)
