Spurious Balloon Announcements

I keep getting intermittent balloon announcements that a "network connection has been unplugged." This isn't true -- my LAN is fine. In earlier posts in Windows Configuration Management, I was advised to edit the the Parameters folder in my Registry editor and create a new name: " Disable DHCPMediaSense" and set the value to = 1 . I did this, but the damn balloon still persists. If anyone has any other ideas on how to disable it, they will have my eternal gratitude. Thanks. -- Davi

To disable any balloons, create in
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced the dword
value 'EnableBalloonTips', data '0'. To disable them globally edit
HKU\.Default key.
There is an important distinction between curing and healing.

Thanks, Jetro. I tried the new value and it seems to be working. If I understand your comment correctly, you are noting that I'm treating the symptom rather than the underlying problem. This point is well taken, and I will keep looking for that problem. But the balloon is no longer delivering any new news, but it is driving me crazy! Along those lines, what other messages will "EnableBalloonTips" = 0 suppress? --- David

You got me absolutely right. As to balloon tips, you already know that
Windows XP has a "bad habit" to keep on displaying from the systray Balloon
Tips, showing all kind of (sometimes annoying ) reminders. While these tips
can be convenient for the newbies, they are far from necessary for the power
user. Some of these tips, like the balloon urging you to sign up for a
Passport account, give up after a while and stop coming out to play. Others,
like the balloon reminding you to download and install the latest and
greatest from Windows Update, never leave you. Just schedule the Update and
you'll never want this, probably, the most meaningful reminder.
