$SPUninstall$ folders

In my Windows directory, after the first folder ($hf_mig$), there are 28
blue folder entries with the date my new computer was set up (7/7/05), which
I don't think were there in the beginning.

They are all named $NTUninstallKB8xxxxx$ (where x varies). Each has a
subdirectory called $spuninstall$. I thought they resulted from my having
started to Copy documents from my new desktop onto my laptop and changing my
mind and removing them. But Copying is not Installing. All of the
spuninstall subdirectories contain a variously dated .exe file plus others
(many drivers). Are these XP staples, or did they result from all the
upgrading of applications and drivers that I did when setting the new
computer up with its XP (old computer had 98SE).

Question: Should I leave them alone, or can they be deleted?

These are uninstallation files for the various Windows hotfixes
(updates) you've installed. If you're sure you'll never want to
uninstall them, you can delete the files.
