Running excel 2003. Is there a way to open two (or more) spreadsheet
in separate instaces of Excel, so i can have two separate windows ope
(for instance, if I have dual monitors set up and want a spread shee
on each). The closest I can find to see two spreadsheets at the sam
time is to tile them w/in the same instance of excel, which is not wha
I prefer.

Just open excel twice (the acutal program, not double-clicking an exce
file which will open in an open instance). Then open the files fro
the Open menu item in the separate versions.

Perfect! Didn't think to do it that way.

Thanks.

I think that just shows separate icons on your task bar for eac
spreadsheet opened, but still is considered the same instance.

Maybe I misunderstood the question. :-

Hi,

Why not open excel, then open file1. Next open Excel
again, and open file2?

That works unless you are running macros stored in your personal.xls file. You
can not open 2 instances of that file

Can you actually arrange and drag the one file over to the other monitor?

: Just open excel twice (the acutal program, not double-clicking an excel
: file which will open in an open instance). Then open the files from
: the Open menu item in the separate versions.

You could try checking:
tools|options|General tab|"ignore other applications"

Then when you double click on that excel file in windows explorer, it should
open in its own instance.

I use personal.xla (an addin, not .xls). It can be opened multiple times
without a problem.

I think that if you're opening two instances of excel, then the second instance
will prompt you about opening in readonly mode (or notify you when it's
available).

And if you want, you could mark your personal.xls file as readonly (in windows
explorer) and then you won't be prompted at all (but it'll make changes to
personal.xls slightly more difficult).
