spreadsheet slow to open

i have a spread sheet around 4MB in size which takes around 5 mins to open.
while it is opening the cpu is at100% (accourding to task manager).

what could be causing this?

Anything from slow recalculation to a potential file corruption.

See if doing this helps to remove potential problems in the file:

- create a backup copy of the file
- Open in Excel, save-as, file type web page
- close file, open file again
- save-as normal Excel workbook (first entry on filetype list)
- close file, now try to open it again.

thanks for the response.

do you mean to open the web version of the file? excel wont let me do this.

opening the original and saving still gives me the same probelm (slow
opening).

Yes. It should open it. If not, the file does expose some sort of corruption.

I don't grasp what you are asking.

Fixing a workbook with corruptions involves exporting the workbook to
HTML format (save as web page) and subsequently importing (opening) the
html file. After that, you can save-as to a normal Excel workbook
format.
