spreadsheet question

i opened a new spreadsheet, and i'm trying to utilize the 'freeze
panes' function. i'm looking to just 'freeze' the contents of the first
column ('A'), but whenever I highlight the entire first column and
select 'freeze panes,' the first couple of columns become frozen (A-H).
any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Select A1 (to make it visible)
then select column A.
Now hit window|Freeze panes

just tried following the suggestion, and the same problem occurs (to be
more specific, when i hit 'freeze', it 'blocks off' columns A1-A12, all
the way to the right to H1-H12). not sure why it's automatically doing
this (especially since i'm just highlighting the A column)...

Just select B1, then freeze panes. Don't select a whole column. HTH

i spoke too soon - by clicking on B1 and 'freeze' i get the left column
(A) to freeze, but now the upper/left-to-right column (1) i cannot get
to freeze as well. in other words, i'd like for both to be frozen at
the same time.

any advice?

Are you trying to freeze column A and row 1--so that they're always visible?

If yes...
select A1 (to make it visible)
select B2
window|Freeze panes.

Every column to the left of the selected cell and every row above the selected
cell will be frozen.

ps. Selecting column B still froze just column A for me. Do you use any merged
cells in your workbook? If yes, what version of excel are you using?

Follow this simple rule when freezing panes.

Everything left of and above the selected cell will be frozen.

i.e. select B2 to freeze row 1 and column A

You might have been confused by Dave's primary instruction of selecting A1.

He mentioned A1 strictly as a precautionary measure to make sure that your
Column A and Row1 were *visible* on your screen (note his reference to this
fact).
If either of them weren't visible, and you invoked Freeze Panes, you could
have hidden some cells from displaying on your screen, where the *only* way
to unhide them would be to "Unfreeze" Panes.
And believe me, many people don't realize that fact for hours or days,
trying to bring *back* those hidden cells.
