Spontaneous Sutdown/Reboot

For the last few days my WinXP Home computer has been
shutting down or restarting on its own , sometimes even
when I'm away from the computer and doing nothing with it.
When it finishes booting I get a message that "Windows
has recovered from a serious error". When I allowed the
automated reporting MS suggested that this was most
likely caused by an Iomega program related to my Zip
drive. I downloaded a patch as per MS instructions, but
this did not help. I then uninstalled the software and
removed the Zip drive, but the problem persisted. I then
used a drive image program to rewrite my C drive as it
was at the end of April, long before I experienced the
problem, but it is still restarting or shutting down on
its own. I have an external Maxtor one touch USB 2.0
drive and a Sony USB 2.0 external DvD writer, but I have
used both without a reboot happening. On the other hand,
I have noticed that the Maxtor drives lights sometimes
show activity when I'm not using it , but not always.

Any Ideas?

Anything in the System Event logs? (hint use Event Viewer). There might be
some error messages around the time of the crash that give more clues.

Sounds like a hardware problem. Please describe more info on your pc.
I.e., manfacturer, PCI cards installed [if you know]. If you bought it [vs
building yourself], can you contact tech support at the seller?

Also, disable 'Automatically Restart' on system failure. Right click on my
computer, left click the Advanced tab, left click on Settings button in the
Startup and Recovery section [bottom section]. Reboot if directed to. This
should provide an error or stop message when your pc runs into trouble. So,
instead of automatically rebooting, the error message will show. This can
help in identifying the cause.
For this option, you just want to wait for the system to fail and to record
the error message and post it here.

It could also be a driver conflict, but the error message should help
identify.

A check of the Event Viewer shows the errors as system
error category (102) event 1003. There is a probably
related event 1001 which says "The computer has rebooted
from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x100000be
(0xb92d55c4, 0x00e84162, 0xb95b74fc, 0x0000000f). A dump
was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini072404-04.dmp."
This file contains no text and can't be deciphered, at
least by me.

I have run Norton A/V , Spybot Search & Destroy, and Ad-
Aware with negative results.

Code be indicates an attempt to write to read-only memory. This *may*
arise if you install a faulty driver or firmware. but in your context
suggests hardware trouble, and I think the most likely problem is
overheating. Open the case and make sure the fan on the CPU chip cooler
is running enthusiastically.

Hi There,
I am having the same probem with 5 computers. What is weird is that they
all reboot with the same problem and at exactly the same time. I have
thoroughly checked for viruses and trojans (Trend Micro). I have also check
any common variables as to the cause. They are all laptops. 4 are IBM
Thinkpads running XP Prof, and Office 2k3. The last PC is an old Sony Vaio
running Win2K Prof and Office 2000.
Thanks,
Rolando
