For the last few days my WinXP Home computer has been shutting down or
restarting on its own , sometimes even when I'm away from the computer
and doing
nothing with it.
When it finishes booting I get a message that "Windows has recovered
from a serious error". When I allowed the automated reporting MS
suggested that this was
most likely caused by an Iomega program related to my Zip drive. I
downloaded a patch as per MS instructions, but this did not help. I

Probably. At any rate you have *something* that is crashing and the
system's 'automatically restart' is cutting in. Turn this off: in
Control Panel - System - Advanced, click Settings in the Startup and
Recovery section. There uncheck 'automatically restart'. You can also
usefully change the 'write debugging information' to (none). You may
now get a Blue screen failure instead, but at least will get some
guidance as to what is happening
If as seems likely it is a driver causing it, the name should show up at
the bottom of the Blue Screen, something.sys Check on that in
windows\system32\drivers; r-click - Properties and the Version page
should say what it relates to.
Such restarts also can often be a matter of over heating, so make sure
the fans are running properly
