I want to be able to split a window in 4 parts, 2 horizontal and 2 vertical.

This would enable a more effictive environment for editing complex texts
such as technical and scientific papers.

I believe you can achieve that. In my version (MacWord 2004), Window | New
Window gives me the same doc open in a new window. Then I can go to each
window and select Window | Split, and have 4 panes with the same doc that I
can independently set to different locations in the doc. Are those commands
available in your version?
