Split/Copy dynamic partitions?

Hi Everyone,

I have a server that is running Windows 2003 Enterprise edition in my R&D
lab, it is set up with a single partition encompassing the entire drive,
roughly 40 gigs. (39.8 to be exact) This is an old 5400 RPM hard drive. I
would like to replace it with a newer 40 gig hard drive. My first idea was
to mirror the two drives, then boot onto the mirrored copy and remove the
original drive. I then realized that the new hard drive is slightly
smaller, (39.6 gigs) so a mirror can not be made.

So my next idea was since there is only five gigs of used data on the drive
to use Norton Ghost 2003, back up the partition to a file on an unused
partition, then restore from that image to my new drive. Well even though
ghost realizes that there is only five gigs of data, it will not restore to
a partition smaller then 39.8 gigs. (Or maybe it is having problems with
dynamic drives, either way, Ghost 2003 will not work)

So while I know I could just find a larger hard drive, it is more of a
principle issue, and the desire to know how you would go about either
resizing a partition that was converted to dynamic, or copying a partition
to another drive where the destination drive is smaller then the source, but
still has enough room for all the data.

Thanks in advance,

Eric
