Spider Solitaire error message

G

Guest

I get an error message when I try to play Spider Solitaire that came with XP.
My computer crashed while doing too many things, including Spider, and when
I restarted the game had the error message which perisists. I tried removing
and reinstalling the game through control panel and also with the OEM full XP
disc I installed the OS with. I also tried using a system restore point
several days before the crash. I still get the "Serious Problem" message
(which I did actually send to Microsoft via the error message box). There
must be a corrupted file associated with Spider.exe (which I tried removing
in Windows/System32 directory and reinstalling with the XP disc). Finally,
the error report says it will send the file
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\5f5c_appcompat.txt to Microsoft when
reporting the problem. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

Hi Betroo,

Can you launch Spider Solitaire if you startup in Safe Mode?

1. Startup your system in SAFE MODE by pressing F8 repeatedly
while your system is booting up after you've shut down your system

2. Make sure you're using one of your Administrator's accounts.

Hi Jimmy S,
Thanks for the idea and sorry for the delay in responding. I tried safe
mode and Spider worked in it. I played a card and saved the game. When the
message asked "Do you want to save over your last saved game" I clicked
"Yes." Then shut down, rebooted, and tried playing in normal mode. But I
get the same error message.

I would appreciate any other suggestions. I usually play this while other
apps are chugging away, so it would be nice not to be restricted to safe mode
playing. Thanks again!

Hi Betroo,

Do you have Norton's software installed? If so, disable it (while offline)
and see if you can launch the game. If you can, we'll reinstall Norton's.

Jimmy S.,
I don't have Norton, but I recently installed Avast, a shareware antivirus.
After reading your post, I did try disabling it and starting Spider, but got
the same message.

I wonder if there is a registry file, or system file that is not being
changed or removed when removing and reinstalling the Spider program?

Thanks again for your time and thoughts on this!

Hi Betroo,

If you started your computer in Safe Mode, and used the same
account, that would indicate that something running on the system
is causing a conflict.

1. Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

Hi Jimmy S.,
Thanks for sticking with me on this.
I took your suggestions. The first one included an outdated link, but I
downloaded a program "Startup Faster! 2004" which has the disable startup
program feature. I disabled each program and tried running Spider with no
luck.

Then I ran the online virus scan you referred to. No viruses were found.
Then I downloaded and ran Spybot which found about 50 Ad cookies and one
other called "DSO Exploit" which changes the registry. It is described as a
security hole in IE. I also ran the immunization feature with Spybot and it
blocked all problems.

So I uninstalled Spider, shut down, rebooted, ran Spybot to stop "DSO
Exploit" again, then installed Spider. Still the error message.

I think I'm running smoother, better protected, but can't play Spider except
in Safe Mode. Any other thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Betroo,

Good catch. I'll switch my recommendation to another program now:

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, etc. using: http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml
* To disable an auto-start entry uncheck its check box.

Since safe mode loads only the basic drivers, perhaps your a device
driver including the Video driver could be causing the issue:
