With a worksheet protected, is there a way to spell check entries in cells
that are not protected?

dvs, Not without VBA, you could use some code to unprotect the sheet run
spell check and then protect the sheet like this

Sub Spell_Check()

Const Password = "123" '**Change password here**

ActiveSheet.Unprotect Password:=Password

Cells.CheckSpelling CustomDictionary:="CUSTOM.DIC",
IgnoreUppercase:=False _

, AlwaysSuggest:=True

ActiveSheet.Protect Password:=Password

End Sub

You can use this macro to unprotect, run the spellcheck, then re-protect the
sheet.

Sub Spell_Check()
ActiveSheet.Unprotect Password:="justme"
Cells.CheckSpelling SpellLang:=1033
ActiveSheet.Protect Password:="justme", DrawingObjects:=True, _
Contents:=True, Scenarios:=True
End Sub
