spell checker on word always defaults to a foreigh language

My Spell checker on word constantly defaults back to Welsh!! can this be
changed, I have tried changing in the tools menu to default to English but
this does not work

In "Tools > Language > Set language" is there a check mark in the box before
"Detect language automatically"? If so, remove it. Set your default
language. Save a new file (it can be blank) and exit Word. If the program
asks you if you want to replace your normal.dot file, say "Yes".
