Spell check not working in Word?

I opened an old document several days ago, and since then, my spell check
does not work. It ignores words that I have intentionally misspelled. I am
running Office 2007.

Actions that I have taken:
- verified the language setting (English US) on both Word and Windows (Vista).
- In Word options->Proofing, the 'check spelling as you type' option is
checked.

Can anyone offer any assistance? This is entirely frustrating- thanks in
advance.

Check if the registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Override" exists and if it does delete it.
