Is Microsoft going backward? No spell check? Is there a
free download somewhere?
Thanks,
Paul

There never was, to my knowledge, spell check provided by previous
versions of XP.

Spell checking is traditionally provided with applications, e.g. Office,
OpenOffice, Mozilla, etc. You can surely find free spelling checking
programs, esp. with OpenOffice and Mozilla (included). Search Google
for more option.

Hi Paul

The spell check needs either MS Office installed or standalone versions of either Word, Excel or Powerpoint.

No version of Windows has ever included a spell checker.

Are you asking about spell checking in either Outlook Express or
Outlook? They use the spell checker that comes with Microsoft
Word, (or another Microsoft Office program) if you have it
installed.
If you don't have Word or Office installed, you probably don't
have a spell checker. However there are several downloadable
freeware/shareware alternative spell checkers that work with
Outlook Express and Outlook. Since I have no personal experience
with any of these, I'll let someone else recommend one.

Greetings --

What do you mean by "...going backwards?" I've never seen any
operating system, Microsoft or otherwise, that had a spell checker.
Spell checking is a function of word processing applications.

Well, give As-U-Type (www.asutype.com) a try. It's a special OS-level
spell check software that works with ALL Windows programs (Outlook
Express, Internet Explorer, Opera etc.) It checks and corrects
spelling as you type so apparently you don't need to stop typing and
go back to correct mistakes yourself... Nice and very practical piece
of software.
