Read a, supposedly, good tip for speeding up XP shutdown
by modifying the registry "TimeToKillServiceTimeout" default value in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control

from 20000 (20secs) to say 2000(2secs).

See:- http://home.earthlink.net/~leetutor/ruXP/Misc/speedup.htm

What harm can result from this?

Many thanks,

When XP receives the shutdown command, it will attempt to gracefully close
any running programs and save any unsaved data in those programs. If you cut
down the time it needs to do this, some data can be lost or, worst case,
corruption could occur in those programs. Many people do not take the time
to close everything before shutting down.

Many thanks for your reply, Ronnie.

I have been trying different "harmless" ways to cut down the delay on
shutting down of Windows, and the best/effective ones I have found to date
are the recommendations on Jim Eschelman's site (thanks to Rick Rogers).

I did a once-off try of the registry tweak but it made no noticeable
difference so I will cross that one off.
