speed up startup and shutdown

I would like to speed up my startup and shut down times on my Vista
notebook. It seems to take a while for both. I have been searching the
web for tips and tricks, but I don't want to mess with my registry.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

My vista notebook takes a little while too, but one of the improvements
people are talking about for the upcoming SP1 is that it is supposed to
speed up boot, shutdown, and logon times. The link Andre gave has some great
info on speeding up everything in a safe way too. I have done pretty much
all of this and I would still like a little more speed, but I think that
Vista SP1 will answer that.
