SPEECH REC WON'T WORK ! HELP

JACKIEHORROR

I am on a Dell Inspiron 1420 with Vista Premium and I can’t run Windows
Speech Recognition.

When I click Windows Speech Recognition in the Start menu this message pops
up: C:\windows\speech\commosapisvr.exe The specified path does not exist.
Check the path, and try again.

When I right click Windows Speech Recognition in the Start menu this message
pops up: C:\windows\speech\common refers to a location that is unavailable.
It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make
sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the
internet on your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located,
the information might have been moved to a different location.

I would love to use this feature but I can not. Please help me resolve this
problem.

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories and right-click
on the Command Prompt and choose "Run as administrator".
Type in: SFC /SCANNOW and press your Enter key.

If that does not work, try repairing your system. Boot from your Windows
Vista DVD, select the System Repair Option > on the setup screen, select
'Repair Computer > Select your installation of Windows > select Startup
Repair option and follow instructions.

In my sober experience the good faith advice Andre has given to you won't
work. It is not to say that "idiotically" it might and I will look like a
fool.

What you rather should do is to call DELL, especially if you have a regular
or extended warrantee. All manufacturers have contracts with MS to take care
of MS operating systems. They have experts who are sitting there and waiting
for you to call them. If you don't they will yawning all they without having
something to do.

What they usually recommend is to download and install a few drivers. You
can actually do it yourselves by uninstalling the feature and
rebooting--this might save you a call and they will eat their lunch without
having a chance to talk about their exciting adventure: fixing your
Inspiron.

There are other ways to play with the drivers.

Also make sure your mic is set up and you can dictate into your computer:
"Peter dictates to his computer. He prefers it to typing ..."

After you set this future up perhaps you will find the path, otherwise why
will it be there?

I had big trouble with one of my XP partitions since August 15: I lost
Internet connection. Nobody could help, even a DELL service call. I did what
Andre has suggested, installing a new XP with repair option--still no
Internet.

The reason I am still thinking about that partition is that although very
much in Vista now I still have some of my passwords left in there mired in
software so old Vista does not want to deal with it.

Another caveat here. Do NOT expect it to run like Dragon Naturally Speaking,
or the like. I have a High Def audio system, and an Altec-Lansing AHS515
headset, and it, to put it bluntly, sucks. Perhaps my voice is just pitched
too low, but I truly believe this is one feature of Vista that is NOT ready
for prime time.
