for outlook 2000
2 questions really
1. is it possible to specify a folder other than 'contacts' where .vcf files
are saved in?
2. i'm building the .vcf files with a program, can i build into the .vcf
some piece of data
that would direct outlook to save into a specific folder other than
contacts? without requiring
the user intervention required in 1. above

Outlook doesn't store .vcf files at all. It can create .vcf files for interchange with other people, but that's not how Outlook itself stores contact data. If you explain your scenario in more detail, maybe we can come up with a solution.

hi thanks for the reply
ok, i understand outlook doesn't store .vcf files, when i send a 'vcard'
with an email, outlook in effect creates an attachment which is a .vcf file.
when that is 'opened', it is opened by outlook, it uses the data in the .vcf
to add a contact to however outlook maintains its contact data base
the default folder where these new contacts are added is the outlook default
'contacts' folder. i would like to be able specify another folder/subfolder
when i want the contact added, not the 'contacts' folder.
if that can be done in the first place, i was hoping to save the user the
trouble of having to specify another folder other than 'contacts' by putting
that folder information in the .vcf file i have sent with the email. since
i'm building the .vcf with a program i have the ability to put in it what i
want, not what outlook puts in it when it is sent automatically with emails.
hth to understand what i'm asking

When the user clicks Save and Close, the new contact item will be saved to their default Contacts folder. You cannot change that behavior. The user can, however, learn to use File | Move to Folder instead of Save and Close to save the item to a different folder.

AFAIK, the vCard specification doesn't include any folder target information. Theoretically, you could include information like that perhaps as a category, but you'd also need a COM add-in installed on the recipient information to act upon it.
