Although your message implies that there may be a link between the
version of Windows and the email, I do not see how this could be.

One possibility is that you need to set the security level of your
email program higher so that it will refuse to accept any messages
that have exe attachments.

Another possibility is that you have done something to publicize your
email address. The people who are sending you this spam had to get
your address somewhere. Are you using Messenger, for example?

I can recommend that you install SpamAssassin. It is free and Consumer
Reports rated it higher than any other spam filter. However, it cannot
filter mail that you receive via email.msn.com.

There's your answer. NEW virus/worms now access the ICQ

You can do the opposite of what you've already done with Message Rules.
Copy down on paper or in a Notepad document the senders and subject lines
you want to get AS SEEN in the From and/or Subject columns. Then create a
rule for each, list, then select Options (bottom button above Cancel) and
select the second item or "...does not contain ... below". Then set it to
delete the unspecified mail from the server. I am back to receiving my
pre-spam mail now.

Greetings --

What you received is either a very common malicious hoax or the
output of a computer infected by one of several wide-spread, mass
emailing worms. The most widely-known are:

W32.Swen.A_mm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Dumaru_mm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Gibe_mm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

Microsoft never has, does not currently, and never will email
unsolicited security patches. At the most, if, and only if, you
subscribe to their security notification newsletter, they will send
you an email informing you that a new patch is available for
downloading.

Microsoft Policies on Software Distribution
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/policy/swdist.asp

Information on Bogus Microsoft Security Bulletin Emails
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/news/patch_hoax.asp

How to Tell If a Microsoft Security-Related Message Is Genuine
http://www.microsoft.com/security/antivirus/authenticate_mail.asp

Any and all legitimate patches and updates are readily available
at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. (Notice that this is the true
URL, rather than the bogus one that may have been contained in the
email you received.) Any messages that point to any other source(s) or
claim to have the patch attached are bogus.

You're receiving these emails because your email address is in
the address book of someone infected with a worm, and/or because you
posted your real email address somewhere on-line, either in a forum
accessible to the public and spambots, such as Usenet, or on an
untrustworthy web site that subsequently sold your address as part of
a mailing list. One thing you can do is notify _everyone_ with whom
you've ever corresponded via email that one or more of them may be
infected with a mass emailing worm, and should take the appropriate
steps.

There's probably no way of blocking all of the bogus messages, but
you can greatly reduce the number you get by creating a rule, based
upon the most commonly used subject lines, to delete the emails from
the server without ever downloading them.

Greetings --

Not quite accurate. ;-} I've never posted my real email address
in Usenet, so I'm not getting any of these false patch offers. ISP is
blocking them, as well, so I'm not getting any as a result of others'
PCs being infected.

On the other hand, at work I get them, because I made the mistake
of subscribing to CNN News alerts using a real email address.

Yes, cookiemonster, XP has indirectly led to the spam attack by connecting
you with a newsgroup via your "Help and Support" screen. But not in any
other way.
As Maureen says, hide your email. It can be disguised from the harvesting
machine that is used by inserting a word in all caps that humans will know
to omit (assuming you trust humans).
For instance, a word like "NOSPAM."
