spacebar deleting characters

In the middle of my typing my document my space bar has
begun deleting characters instead of moving them to the
right. How do I undo this so i can insert sentences into
my document without other parts of it being deleted.

begun deleting characters instead of moving them to the
right. How do I undo this so i can insert sentences into
my document without other parts of it being deleted.

Press the Insert key *again* -- obviously you did it the first time
without noticing.

Look at the status bar at the bottom of the Word window: if the
letters OVR are black, you are in "overtype" mode and anything you
type (not just spaces) will erase what's there already. If the OVR is
gray, typing will insert characters and push existing ones to the
right.

You can also change from overtype to insert mode and vice versa by
double-clicking the OVR indicator on the status bar.
