space between bullet and text

Not sure of Word version, but you should have the
following options:
Go to Format/Bullets and Numbering. Click on the Bullet
option you want to use. Then click the Customize button
in the bottom right corner. There you can change your
bullet symbol, Indent and text position. The preview
screen lets you see what you're doing.

It's Word 97, sorry.
The settings in "Customize" (Indent, and Text Position)
don't seem to do what I am asking for.

They should. But make sure that the paragraph style doesn't have any tab
stops to the left of the indent/text position location.
