I think you are in OverType mode. Try hitting your Insert key on your
keyboard once and then use the space bar. This should turn off OverType mode.

You can tell if you are in Overtype mode if OVR is appearing on the status
bar at the bottom (center) of your Word window. You can also double click
the OVR to turn it on and off.
