SP3 - Status Question

I have advised a number of people to hold off on installing SP3 for
obvious reasons.

One has actually encountered problems as he had automatic updates on and
SP3 was installed. I had him use Add/Remove Progs to remove SP3 and he
seems to be OK.

My question is this, what is going on with SP3 remedies? Is MS working
on a new version of SP3, or is there a "fix" for it that can be
installed ASAP?

I guess that there needs to be a "Status" report of some kind to keep
users up to date on what is going on.

Any comments?

SP3 will not be changed. You need to install it properly, however. This
means uninstalling ALL anti malware programs and making sure that your
AV does NOT load with Windows or uninstall it as well. After all that,
do a clean up, chkdsk and defrag before installing SP3. Once finished
with the SP3 install, reboot TWICE.

There is one. It would seem you have done nothing to research it for
yourself; there is info all over the place and esp on MS.

The only people having issues with SP3 are those who had HP systems
with AMD processors and users whose systems are already bunged up with
gobs of garbage software and who knows what. SP3 is safe but does
require some reading on the Microsoft for software compatibility. I
have had nothing but positive experiences installing it on a multitude
of different person's PCs.

That's what I thought too but my friend with the problems, continuous
reboots, real slooooooow startup and operation has a Dell with an Intel
chip.

I had him remove (UNinstall) it based on the research that I've done
despite what that idiot "Twayne" suggested in an earlier post. Guys like
that just love to post crap online, but that's another matter.

My friend says he installed it using Windows update automatically.
Others here have posted that one needs to uninstall AV and FW software
which sounds extreme unless, of course, it is Norton or McAfee.

My review of posts here and at other sites show problems with SP3 on
many other PC brands and with Intel chips. This is verified by the
numerous articles located at the MS Windows XP Solution Center for SP3.

I was hoping someone, MVP's in particular, were compiling info. Even Jim
Eshelman at AUMHA doesn't address it at all.

when microsoft believes that they have mastered 'endless reboot' they will

There's been some reports that tomorrow Microsoft may have some kind
of compatibility check for those who will be getting it via Windows
Update. But as far as anything else, it's really a matter of what a
person has on their PCs. On the majority of PCs I've installed SP3 to,
they've all been lean in the software install department. If SP3 is
breaking anything on a person's PC, I stand by my word that it's
someone else's software, not SP3 that is not fully complaint. I've
installed SP3 (and earlier betas and release candidates) on at least
10 PC running Symantec Corporate AV 10.1 and nothing bad happened when
it came up after reboot. I think people just are not keeping their
software current and crying foul when it breaks. This whole busness of
turn of this and uninstall that before putting it on borders on
retarded.

You know, I think that's smart. When I do get SP3, I think I'll backup,
restore a clean install, apply SP3, then backup, and start reinstalling
apps.

Yes, a backup is always a good idea but an audit of your current apps
is always a better one. Installing XP with SP3 on a slipstreamed disk
is the best if you plan that route.

Certainly it doesn't take much effort to go to the software makers web
sites and see if there are any patches / updates for the existing app
that may make it a bit more SP3 friendly before SP3 is put on. It's
just smart to do some easy preparation work before the deployment of a
major service pack. I would guess that after tomorrow we'll see a
whole slew of web sites posting how SP3 broke everything but I bet
dollars to donuts we'll see updates from the software makers appear a
short time afterwards. SP3 has been an available download in release
candidate format since LAST YEAR so no software vendor has any excuse
to not have tried it against their existing software so as to make the
users ready for it.

Breaking XP would possibly help Vista look better wouldn't it?

Give it a few of months until all the finger pointing dies down. You're not
going to hurt anything by not installing it, and bringing up the obvious
flaws in a buggy release is just going to rub people the wrong way, IMHO.

Rough count, how many applications are on your PC? Is *everything*
fully up to date in terms of apps, drivers, BIOS, etc.?

Same as usual. The new users/downloaders are the BETA testers. Nothing

The obvious reasons for holding off are all over this newsgroup -
approximately 30% of the discussions here are related to problems with
the damn service pack.

The use of "obvious" was in reference to a significant number of users
reporting major system problems with either installation or
dysfunctional problems with the OS after installation.

Windows XP is considered the most stable OS that Microsoft has made
available to users and the SP3 package has caused havoc with it.

Now, what are you qualified to talk about?

As a matter of fact, *Everything* except BIOS is fully up to date, but
are you implying that a piece of code that is not fully up to date is
garbage?
