Close SuperAntiSpyware (right-click on it's icon near the clock and close
it/exit it.)
Other than AVG - pretty sure the rest are non-resident (they run when you
tell them to run.)

What version of AVG?

I don't really see how your follow-up post bears on your original question
of disabling AdAware...

To disable any or all of these products, consult their helpfiles,
documentation or websites; yours is not an XP question.

However, for a pointer, look in AdAware's Options or Preferences for
anything along the lines of "start with Windows" and disable that; also hunt
down any likely-looking service(s) (Start > Run > services.msc), checking
the executable path and comparing with where you installed AdAware.

As for the others - as I say, not sure why you listed them if you're just
having problems with one...

I'd recommend against having real-time resident protection running for more
than one anti-malware product concurrently (viz one anti-virus, one
anti-malware). I don't have *any* running in residence, preferring regular
user-initiated scans.

Spyware Blaster isn't resident anyway, so there's nothing to disable. Ditto
for CCleaner, I believe.

Be sure you know what you're doing with this protection turned off!

I believe that SpyBot has a component called TeaTimer that, if chosen, runs
resident.

thanks but not having problems with any of them. rather, it says to disable
them all before installing sp3, so it is an xp question.

i did check each help tab but when i type in disable, i find little to do
with or nothing at all.

thanks again

Not on the system tray itself - the icon for the program. ;-)

sorry shenan, but they way i have it is this; i "sent" all my security

i tried the right click & i get the usual open, run, scan with, send to,

Then - my suggestion - uninstall SuperAntiSpyware, SpyBot Search and
Destroy, LavaSoft Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster and CCleaner for now. Using
Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs. Reboot afterward.

Other than SuperAntiSpyware and *maybe* SpyBot Search and Destroy - there is
nothing likely running 'resident' on your computer - but as a full
precaution - uninstalling and rebooting afterwards would make sure. (After
you are done - you can install whatever you like back - but from the list of
suggested application removals I just gave - none of them are giving you
much active protection (other than maybe TeaTimer from SpyBot Search and
Destroy, the free versions of everything else are 'run as you need' - even
if they are sitting there supposedly active.)

To disable AVG 8.x...
(Already be off the Internet -disconnect physically.)

Right-click on the AVG icon...
Choose to Open the AVG User Interface...
Choose Components from the top of the AVG User Interface...
Choose Resident Shield...
Uncheck the Resident Shield Active box...
Click Save Changes...
(Reverse later to enable.)

In the end - the installation of SP3 would likely work with everything
installed an working... AVG, SuperAntiSpyware, etc. It has for me on many
occassions. However - stopping them and disconnecting from the Internet
while you install SP3 - eliminates variables. Less to worry about, more
likely to succeed.

After you are done - you can install anything you uninstalled. I suggest
visiting the web page for and downloading the latest versions of each
application.

Personally - I keep my AV and Firewall running and nothing else - unless
needed. Then I would probably turn to MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware to
help me cleanup.

Anyway - enjoy installing SP3.

You have backed up your important stuff - right? Better safe than sorry.

Well, you can't disable AdAware and need to - sounds like a problem.
rather, it says to disable them all before installing sp3, so it is an xp
question.

Faulty logic: "I want to pick some apples but can't work my stepladder. This
is clearly an apple-related problem." :)

Were you having difficulty turning off just AdAware, or the other apps you
listed too?

Anyway, you got guidance from Shenan and me; hope it goes well when you're
up to it.

Dallas-
Disable Tea Timer in Spybot. That will end the prompts.

Your post is unclear, Dallas.

You mentioned SP3 in the subject line, yet it doesn't appear in the post
iteslf. Is your goal disabling all the startup programs that can
interfere with the upgrade to SP3? If so, the solution is easy. Merely
configure a clean boot:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Some have had success apparently in upgrading to SP3 while in Safe Mode
(although I haven't tested this yet), so that's an option, too.

Do you have the standalone SP3 installer? It's much better than using
Automatic Updates.
