Having upgraded to MS Windows Update V.5. I now get an error message [Error
number: 0x80072EE2] when searching for updates which apparently means
"Internet timeout".

Some research reveals that it is necessary to disable the Sygate firewall or
at least enable SVCHOST.EXE on port 443 to get any updates at all. This did
not happen with V.4. of MS Windows Update.

MS wants to upgrade us to SP2 via MS Update but do they seriously expect us
to disable the firewall and invite in the bad guys while waiting for SP2 to
be delivered?

Any advice on this issue from MVP's and other NG contributors would be
appreciated.

I enabled port 443 and the upgrade sweep completed and advised no upgrade at
present so the theory makes sense. This advice came from the forum available
within V.5.
Are you saying that you have been able to install SP2 via this route
already?

Hi

Just a FYI, based on this article
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836985

it looks like even WU V4 needed TCP/IP port 443 open (at least
in some cases)...

Thank you Torgeir. I think I have a better understanding of the issue but it
still means opening the firewall to upgrade to SP2.

I had that prob - I took Sygate back off and put Kerio back up - no probs.
It's Sygate, not a "firewall" per se.

I am using V5 and Sygate Personal Firewall Pro. I did not have to open
port 443 for svchost to use windows update. It works as it should.

On my Sp1 to SP2 build it worked fine.

The probs came when I used it on a pure SP2 system (slipstreamed XP and SP2
and then did gen).

Ok, I have created the slipstream CD but did not install with it. Mine
was an upgrade from SP1 to SP2.

I agree, it surprised the hell out of me, cause I had been using Sygate on
the SP1 to SP2 release w/o probs. I have noticed a couple things on the
Sygate forum complaining about things that get blocked without any rule
being active (traffic log lists as "block all" rule) I had a bunch of
those hits, too, though they didn't seem to be hurting me... I figure
they'll find it in 6 months and I'll go back and try it again - I like the
Sygate interface better, though I am licensed for Kerio4.
