SP2 Upgrade

ive tried installing SP2 on machines here at work and cannot get the SP to
reboot clean. It hangs and will not reboot unless i hard boot the machine. We
are not using SMS or SUS to deliver apps because thats not in the scope at
this point. Ive tried disabling the automatic update services and several
other methods to trace my issue. The log files that SP creates once I hard
boot dont indicate or give me any clues to what the log off procedure is
hanging up on. Ive even tried cleaning the user profile registry hive at
logoff and this doesnt help. Anyone have any ideas?

How do you know it is the log off procedure that's hanging up on
something?

Dave,
I have ran the executable with that switch along with all the others in
several different combinations. Along with the /forcerestart switch .Im giong
to be deploying this in silent mode so Im using the /quiet switch along with
/o to overwrite OEM files. Still once you allow the reboot process it gets
all the way to " running log off scripts" and hangs. We presently dont have
any logoff scripts running. Only at log on..

Thanks,

Nathan

What does it show as the last thing happening in the SP2 installation log?
How about the system and/or application event logs - what do they show
before you do the hard reboot - I'll assume by turning the PC off/on?

Hmm, I don't even have that screen. But then I've never tried to
run a log-off script.

Could you check what log-off scripts are supposed to run on the
computer? Perhaps the problem is either in the log-off script
settings or in the script itself, if one exists.

It just shows the attempt to connect to auto update server and I have this
policy turned off in GPO on the local box.. I think the upgrade is
overwriting something that is in the current build and is getting stomped on
and causing the hangup. I just cant find it. Event viewer isnt giving me any
clues either.. ive looked through all three sections of it .
Thanks for any other ideas..

If you look at your event logs are you also seeing it install other hotfixes?
We're having a similar issue, and even though we are turnning off AutoUpdate
it appears the machines are downloading other updates at the time of XP SP2
installation.

Sorry this isn't much help. We have an incident open with Microsoft
regarding this issue.
