Recover your computer to a bootable state and remove Windows XP SP2
To recover your computer to a bootable state and remove Windows XP SP2,
follow these steps:
1.. Start your computer by using the Windows XP Recovery Console or by
using the Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE), depending
on your situation. To start your computer by using the Recovery Console,
follow these steps:
1.. Insert the original release version of the Microsoft Windows XP CD
in your computer's CD drive or DVD drive, and then restart your computer.

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD drive or DVD
drive. For more information about how to do this, see your computer's
documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.
2.. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears, press a
key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
3.. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen is displayed, press R to start
the Recovery Console.
4.. When you are prompted, type the number that corresponds to the
installation of Windows that you want to access from the Recovery Console,
and then press ENTER. For example, if you have one installation of Windows
on your computer, type 1, and then press ENTER.
5.. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password, and then
press ENTER.
2.. At the command prompt in Recovery Console, type the following lines.
Press ENTER after each line.
cd $NtServicePackUninstall$\Spuninst
batch spuninst.txt
exit

3.. Remove the Windows XP CD from your computer's CD drive or DVD drive,
and then restart your computer.
4.. Run the Windows XP SP2 Removal Wizard to remove Windows XP SP2. To do
this:
1.. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2.. At the command prompt, type the following lines. Press ENTER after
each line.
cd %Windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\Spuninst
spuninst.exe

3.. Follow the instructions to remove Windows XP SP2.

At this point, unless you did a parallel install, it's a matter of
reinstalling them all. With your description, I'm guessing you have a
Prescott CPU on an i865/875 chipset motherboard. Could you please post the
make/model of the motherboard.

The correct procedure in this case would have been to disable the L1/L2
cache in the BIOS and then XP will start. You can then go into the Control
Panel and uninstall SP2.

I had the exact same problem... twice now!! (ugh!)
After installing SP2, my desktop machine freezes on startup (when the
bars moving across the screen just stop)

I've got the Microsoft Bluetooth Desktop (I'm thinking might be the
problem...) on my Athlon Barton 2500 system. Ran fine before
installing SP2, and I had to wipe the startup files to get it to boot
last time. I tried following RonK's directions, but I had the same
results (the bars stop moving and nothing happens).

It looks like I'm going to have to wipe my startup files again. No
more SP2 for my desktop, I'd rather chance getting a virus or trojan
since I would get the same result I have now!!!! (at least the
virus/trojans aren't self inflicted!)

I also have a Dell laptop, and the SP2 upgrade on it went smoothly.

I loaded sp2 last night,my computer is down..I get ntldris compressed...I am
lost

Somewhere along the line (not in the course of installing SP2) you have
said 'compress drive' for C: and this has compressed the essential
files needed at boot - it is likely that the original compression was
sensible enough to leave those alone, but it has compressed the ones
being put on by SP2 before they came into use. It *may* work if you
try restoring the files concerned outside windows, if not you are going
to be stuck with reinstalling. Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard
Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R for
Repair. Assume any password requested is blank, and TAB over.

Give
Copy D:\i386\ntldr C:\ntldr
Copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\ntdetect.com
(that assumes the CD drive is seen as D: which is probable)
then
Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini
Del C:\boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild

I *think* that will give you uncompressed copies, but can't guarantee
that there will not be trouble down the line with other files needed in
booting. Another you may find complained about and try copying also is
Copy D:\i386\ntfs.sys C:\window\system32\drivers\ntfs.sys

But a pre SP2 one of that which you would get may give trouble anyway
