I have what might be a strange question.. I have a group of friends that
tend to share software with one another (games, OSes, whatnot) that want me
to set them up with SP2. Keeping their tendency to pirate in mind, some
might have legit versions of WinXP while others may not - will the machines
with non-legit versions be denied the right to update to SP2, or will it go
off as expected? I seem to recall something about bootlegged versions of
WinXP being denied the right to update to SP1 back when it was released...
am I making things up?

Sorry for rambling - long day, too little coffee, etc.etc.

Tony;
If they want SP-2 they can get it very easily from numerous sources.
If they can not even get SP-2 themselves, they most likely know less
about Windows and Service Packs than most people I meet.
As for installing, SP-2 will install on some stolen licenses but not
all.

Did you actually read what Tony said ?

What do you mean, they want you to "set them up" with SP2?
Do they want you to give them a copy? Are they too stupid
to install it themselves? Are you worried that their
unprotected computers might become protected? What?

Tony, the answer to your question is that unless your freinds are using
a select few keys, SP2 will install without problem. The beta install
did balk at CD keys that had been generated with the widely available
key generator. The release version does not.

Hi

You are correct, SP1 have some CD keys blacklisted, and SP2 uses
the exact same list.

Microsoft maintains a list of known pirated product IDs. If a person's
illegal version of XP happens to use one of those IDs, SP2 will not install.

If you take along the full 266MB version of SP2 and run it on a pirated
system, it will refuse to install
