SP2 of no use to me?

R

Richard

During the seminar today, I found that most of the stuff added to SP2 will
probably be of no use to me :(
Maybe I was half asleep, but this is what I got from it.

Hibernate once resume many is for Disk Overlay and is not recommend for
flash (why?)
Can't a hibernate file be saved one time to flash then protected by RAM EWF,
so then it's read only during boot?
If we Hibernate from the same place each time then who cares if the changes
are lost?

All the huge firewall stuff and other security updates doesn't mean anything
to me since we are Not Hooked to Internet and from what I understand, it's
really huge. I like the ability to configure ports offline but currently
don't need it.

All the new ways to update a field image requires a internet Lan connection
so it's of no use to me, stay with DUA.
Media Player 9 - Nope no need

I was told no additonal support was added for Wireless Ethernet
configuration (besides Bluetooth). I thought MS said they were going to
include a command line utility to help configure adhoc and access points so
we didn't have to bring in all that additional support which makes the image
explode? According to speaker, it is up to the user's application to
configure all this. Currently, if I remember right, I had to bring in
explorer, control panel and network configuration so I could set the access
points and Security Keys, then afterwards, it was all lost on reboot
(Without EWF). Several have mentioned this problem. RegMon, FileMon never
show anything being written after this is configured, saved, and
operational. It's like it's configured in ram then lost on boot. (Again,
No EWF when I was trying to get it working).

Increased Application Compatibilty Mode by Importing complete groups of
components in to assure application runs, then have to remove the un-needed
components? That seems pretty wasteful and does not seem to be the way to
create a small image. Maybe I misunderstood this as well. The idea of
importing complete groups sound promising, if you have tons of space and
need to insure you have All the printer drivers or Graphics drivers....

I like the fact all the QFE's were rolled up, but it sure doesn't appear to
be worth while for us to burn new images everywhere since it SP2 can't be
installed in the field any other way.

Now, if some of Target Designer was fixed or at least some patches would
come out for it that would be real great, but I hear we have to wait until
LongHorn which is another year or two away...

What is your take on all this. Am I way off base with what "I" heard?

You have heard something wrong. Take a careful read on the subject in SP2 documentation:

Well.. Windows Firewall is defintiely of use for networked devices :) When you say "Not Hooked to Internet" did you mean - no
network hook at all or just Internet? Could the devices be on Intranet or corp net? If so, you may want to consider tha fact that
there could be many other machines on the network that can affect your devices and attack with virues/worms/etc. WF will help you to
minimize the attacks.
ALso, you can prevent users from running some applications (exe's) with SP2 WF. This may also be helpful for standlone devices (not
networked).

Again, "internet Lan" - you mean Internet or network?
SUS and SMS soluation are more for for corp networks.

WPS - Wireless Provisioning Service. WPS API is also available.

I am not sure but netsh may have a net plug in for WPS.
Anyway, WPS API functions will help you to set up your wireless connections.

Definitely give it a try with this SP2. This might have been fixed there as Wirelees stuff is way enhanced.

Drivers usually don't eat much of the space. Although if you refer to the new Generic Driver Support component of SP2 it is
definitely for those who don't care about the image footprint.
I like the fact all the QFE's were rolled up, but it sure doesn't appear to

According to MS, they are working in it (SP2 install in field). Searcg NG archive for Jon's comments on this.

Tools have not been changed (touched) in SP2. Except INF importer and SDI Automation.

Read a bit more about SP2:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/e...roducingWindowsXPEmbeddedWithServicePack2.asp

And watch coming Webcasts.

In any case, it is going to be your decision whether to upgrade to SP2 or not.

Thanks KM for the comments...

That is what I had in mind. Again, the speaker mis-spoke.

We do use the ethernet port and a crossover cable to maintain.configure the
device in the field. I didn't think about it, but it would be easy for an
infected machine to possibly infect the device during that connection time.
I better give it some more thought.

Thanks, I will place with it when I get some more time. I downloaded this
and it looks like it may do what I want.

In March or April from what I saw. That is fine, it will give me time to
play with it.

Bummer.... That CPU bug in there really is a killer. Something consumes
the entire CPU making it go to 100% and then it drags on forever. Once it
occurs, almost impossible to fix it short of a total install. Not sure but
on this end, it almost seems AMD specific?

Again, Thanks.

You mean the 100% CPU usage bug always shows up on AMD?
I don't think so. I have at least two dev machines (AMD Athlon, 1.99 GHz and 64 Mobile) that have XPe ToolKit installed. Works
pretty good on both (SP1 and SP2).

I said almost seems that way. I have a 2 ghz AMD machine I can't use as my
dev machine so I have to use a 1ghz laptop because on the fast machine, it
takes hours to build an image and cpu goes to 100%, exactly as numerous
others reported.

Similar has been reported by some other folks here a while ago but I don't recall details if it was AMD specific.

Anyway, you can try to narrow down the problem to help MS to fix it (if it appears to be a bug of the Toolkit).

You can try building a project on the machine that shpws slow TD performance but using CMI Explorer.
You can use a sample script I posted in NG a while ago:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.embedded/msg/87eaa532e2958373

If it is the same slow, it is likely CMI performance. If not, it could be TD/VBScript bug(s).

KM

PS. Hope you don't have programs like AV, file/disk access monitor, etc. running on that computer.
