Over 12 hours ago I got the Automatic Update icon in my
system tray asking me to download SP2. I clicked
download but nothing happened. I no longer have the
Automatic Update icon in my system tray, but I am pretty
sure that SP2 isn't installed yet because I never clicked
install and the Windows Update site does not show that it
has been installed. Any ideas?

This has happened to me as well. A friend of mine got the
update this afternoon and it worked great. Any ideas on
why it works for some and not others? Also any ideas on
what to do if it doesn't work? Thanks in advance.

SP2 will not download on my computer as well. I have the
Windows Update icon in the tray, saying "Downloading
updates: 0%" but there is no actual download! Please tell
us how to fix this.. thanks.

I hear you. Here is the solution.
Go to the MS SP2 page at:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/winxpsp2.mspx
;
and download the SP2 for "Multiple Computers". It's the same Service Pac
for all computers. It took 15 minutes to download the 272,391kb file whereas
the one distributed on the 11th to me through WU took 6 hours.
Once downloaded execute the file and it automatically installs on Pro and
Home.
The only action required on my part was to accept the EULA and click next 2
or 3 times. I then burned it to a CD and installed it on my other XP-Pro and
2 XP-Home standalone computers.
Worked like a charm. Straight forward and simple. Reboot and you're good
to go. The EXE file is the key for this upgrade, not WU.

The purpose of Windows update is to parcel out the SP2 to home
users so MS servers won't be overwhelmed. Only so many can receive it per
day and then the slice of bandwidth you're getting is tiny which is why it
takes forever to d/l in some cases. Windows Update doesn't do anything
magical on the instal other than execute the EXE file. The analysis of your
system and the update is all handled from within the EXE file.

Even MS has commented in these newsgroups this works just fine.

Thanks MS, great improvements

Same here. Rebooted and now have the the Auto Update icon in systray,
displaying "Downloading updates: 0%".

Guys, The First icon pop-up was to turn on AWU.
Now you are in line for the download when your machine is
chosen.

The dowload will take a while.
It will be between 70-120 MB depending on what you have
installed.
When that is complete you will know that the updates for
SP2 are ready.
When it runs you need to reply to at least one sceen, the
EULA.
It will take many minutes on a home machine to install.

Before you in stall, simply do the following 4 things.
1. disconnect the tele wire from your dsl or disconnect
your dialup.
2. Disable the av, like Norton tray icon right click,
disable auto=protect.
3. Stop your 3rd party firewall.
4. Close any unneeded programs in the background like
messenger, audio, video, dvd controls in the tray.

Make sure you are logoned on as ADMIN rights account,
i.e. the real ADMIN or the MAIN first user of the machine.

Go for it and no touchy, no static, no power blowers on
and off, no clothes dyers, no little kids in the room, no
drinks or running around and no fighting over the
keyboard. :)

It will install or it will not install and back out.
If it installs and the re-bot fails, do noral cd recovery
and determine the problem.
If it reboots answer the questions
Turn on AWU - YES, this is the new V5.
Use the fiewall - YES or to use yours NO
AV - It will be ON or off, if on it will no its status or
not. It doesn't matter as long as the AV is running.

NOw reboot again.
check things out connect to the internet and watch the
new option activate.

Piece of cake, :)

I concur heartily. I upgraded three computers last night and today without
problems. The only sticking point is the 266 MB download if you don't have
a fast connection (fortunately I do and it only took 12 minutes).
Everything working fine, network and firewall cohabitating well.

LOL! Using Auto Update is ridiculous! The network install is much easier,
and you don't have to wait for MS to spoon-feed your OS patches.

Auto Update is for idiots and fools.

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!
"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei!"

Automatic Updates spent 5.5 hours "downloading" SP2 with no progress
at all. So I shut down Automatic Updates, downloaded the 266MB network
installation of SP2 from Microsoft, installed it, and so far, everything is
working fine.

If you already have initiated the download via AWU, although 0% has been
downloaded sofar, can you cancel the download? Will WU recognize that SP2 has
already been downloaded and installed?

How do I shut down that Auto Undater? After 10 hours still shows 0% and
right or left clicking on it does nothing.

Shannon;
I was just informed this seems only to be an issue when you select
"Notify me..." in Automatic Update and they are working on it.
Select the other Automatic Update option and see if it works.
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab
Select "Automatic Recommended"
Click OK and follow prompts

Totally incorrect as much of what you post in the newsgroups.

Just because Automatic Update is not suitable for you does not mean it
is not the correct solution for others.
Your experience is no where wide enough to make such a broad all
encompassing statement.

However your description may fit those who make such broad all
encompassing statements.

I had the "Notify me..." setting selected. When I was notified (yesterday), I
initiated the download. No download. Earlier today, I changed the setting
to "Download updates...". That was about 6 hours ago. Still at 0%
downloaded. I have since manually downloaded SP2. Question: Can/Should I
cancel the Automatic Update download? Any issues with installing from the
file I downloaded, or should I just be patient.

Well, I was getting a little annoyed with the computer
because it was going really slow and not going back to
the desktop after the screen saver had been on (never had
that problem before ... had to press ctrl-alt-del), so I
restored the computer to earlier in the week. Everything
seems fine now. I just reconnected to the internet, but
nothing seems to be happening with AU. Is there anyway
to find out whether or not any of the SP2 files were
downloaded?

Thanks,
Shannon

Control Panel, Automatic Updates, turn off updates, click Apply then
OK. The AU icon should disappear.

Shannon,
Forget AU. I'm sure it's the best way for MS to distribute the SP2 to the
world but if you have issues with it just restart teh computer, download the
SP2 for multiple machines, it's the full version SP. Then execute it.
No files have been installed on your machine untill all the SP has been
downloaded. So not to worry. Do yourself a favor and just download the SP.

Please see earlier posts. Microsoft has botched the distribution
completely...it is a total fiasco (as I indicated, amazing since they had
years to get ready). Try and try again.

I suggest to turn off Auto Update. Order the CD or use broadband to get the
whole package.

Damn stupid business practice if you ask me.
