SP2 Install Left Garbage Directory...

T

The Merg

I installed SP2 for Windows XP a while ago with no problems. Everything has been working fine, but one thing has been bugging me for a bit. After the installation was completed, I had garbage directory that I guess SP2 created for during the installation. When the installation completed, this directory was not removed. Now Windows will not let me remove it either.

The directory is "35447c1f6a37c52cbe18e7a6f48d" and has a subdirectory of "sp2" and is located on my root C: drive. The directory was hidden and read-only. I can click on the 354... directory and modify it without issues. But, if I click on the "sp2" subdirectory I am told that "Access is denied." Thus, I cannot remove either of these directories.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks,
The Merg

This folder is not required after you install the service pack, and you
can safely delete this folder. When you install Windows XP SP1, this
temporary folder is created on the volume that has the most free space.
The folder name contains 20 random characters, and is not always created
on the same volume as the Windows folder. For example, this temporary
folder may have the following name:

9470bb12e8a4f3447657236478e41c5

This folder is automatically deleted by Windows XP after you install the
service pack. However, if the folder is not automatically deleted by
Windows XP, you can safely delete this folder.

For the "Access Denied" error, take ownership of those folder and then
delete
