SP2 Crap?

Hello all,
I am having some seriously frustrating problems with SP2...that is, nothing
works.
I have two computers that are giving me headaches, an acient Dell that I
have upgraded with XP SP2, and my own home-built puter: "The AntiChrist".
I have recently installed SP1 on my new RAID array on the AntiChrist and
then upgraded with an SP2 cd. On the Dinosaur Dell, I upgraded from 98 SE
with an XP upgrade-cd that had SP2 built in. Both computers have exhibited
the same problems:

1. Disk Defragmenter can't do anything, a look in Event Viewer shows that
Defragmenter needs some service to be one in order to work. (sorry, I can't
remember what service) Even though that service and every other associated
service is running. (I CAN remeber that!)

2. Autoplaying a cd is impossible. Another glance in Event Viewer shows that
the 'RPC Server' isn't avialible. I've looked everywhere, including the
registry, and have found no sign of this service/program.

3. I can't access anything in the Microsoft Managment Console. Same thing: I
get an error message complaining about the RPC Server being unavailible.

4. Disk Manager doesn't work, it complains that I need to setup an exception
for it in Windows Firewall, even though I already did. I disabled the
Firewall and still got the error message.

These are just some of the idiotic problems that have plagued both PC's.
So what did I do? I said: "Ta hell with SP2!". I uninstalled SP2 (cause it
was just an upgrade) on the AntiChrist, and guess what? Everything worked!
ARRRGHHHH!!!
Because SP2 is built into XP on the Dell, I can't uninstall it.
The only similarity between the two PCs is that both have an ACPI HAL, and
that's it.

Can anyone tell me what could be wrong? Did I miss something? Or is SP2 just
plain sh*t?

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Run services.msc and start it if it's not running. (And
set it to automatic.) The dependency list on that service
is huge so I'm not surprised you're having problems if
it's not running.
