Hi all

Quick question; do you have to have SP2 installed first before firing
in SP3 or can you if say installing a clean copy of XP go straight to
SP3?

Best regards

Tony

If you downloaded the file and read it, then you are reading wrong. You SP1
minimum to install SP3.

It is a cumulative update. Go straight to SP3.

The only flavour I have not updated yet is XP Gold (pre SP1, or XP w/o a service pack).
I have had no problems upgrading from SP1 --> SP3.

As long as the XP install has at least SP1 installed, you do not need to
install any other updates before SP3.

Sp3 should install just fine if you don't have any sps installed. I
just made my own xp cd with sp3 using the first version of xp. I
installed windows xp using that xp cd that I created with sp3 on my
niece's dell and voila. Everything installed like a dream.

Thanks everybody for your fast and informative replies, I've grabbed a
copy of SP1a and everything is hunky dory :)

I would also suggest that you get a copy of Autostreamer and try to
slipstream SP3 onto your install CD. This will make later re-installs and
repairs much, much easier.

Note that some OEM CDs cannot be slipstreamed if they have other updates
applied. Unfortunately, one of the only ways to find out is to try.

Hello Tony,

A person DOES need either SP1 or SP2 to be installed in order to install
SP3.

SP3 will NOT install directly on top on just XP 'gold.'

Ramone, where did you get this idea?

The Microsoft page Nonny cited, http://tinyurl.com/2denpw , says
"Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released
updates for the operating system."

And, under System Requirements, it can be installed on any of:
Windows XP;
Windows XP Home Edition;
Windows XP Home Edition N;
Windows XP Media Center Edition;
Windows XP Professional Edition;
Windows XP Professional N;
Windows XP Service Pack 1;
Windows XP Service Pack 2;
Windows XP Starter Edition;
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Since XP alone is on the list, I conclude that SP1 is not required.

SP1 is not required. You can go straight from the original XP.

Hmm..that's the way I first read it as well, then everybody jumped in
and said different. Would be nice to be clarified, not having to
install SP1a would sure save a lot of time!

What you are reading is the requirements for the "Overview of Windows XP
Service Pack 3 ". You have to download "Overview of Windows XP Service Pack
3" and read that and you will see that SP1 minimum is needed.

Thanks Nonny, the way I read that; you can just go ahead with SP3 and

You didn't read far enough.

Download one of the three documents that you can access from that
article and you will see that SP1 or SP2 is a requirement:

"SP3 is cumulative, so users can install SP3 on top of Windows XP SP1
or SP2.

Windows XP SP3 supports the same languages as Windows XP did in its
initial release.

You can run the SP3 update package on any edition of Windows XP SP1 or
SP2."

Well that clears that up..many thanks for your time and trouble :)

Did you actually try this? Do you have a Gold XP cd that you can use to
install XP without any service packs and then apply SP3 to the virgin
installation that has no service packs installed? If the answer to
these questions is "no" don't present your opinions as facts.

You concluded wrong, if you read here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389 you will find that:

"You must have either Windows XP Service Pack 1a or Windows XP Service
Pack 2 installed in order to install Windows XP Service Pack 3."

Your conclusions or notions as are just that, you are not helping any
one by spreading incorrect information.
