SP2 and restarts

I picked up d HP pavilion a642ns' and updated them both to SP2. One of
them hangs whenever I restart the system. Windows will log and I will
get stuck at a black screen right before the bios screen and the HD
light will be stuck on. If I uninstall SP2, everything works great. The
system has an AMD Athlon 64 3200 in it and there is no difference in
hardware or upgrade path between this one and the other one. Any help
would be great.

Did you go to HP's tech support website and download any patches/updates
to HP programs that need to be installed prior to SP2? I have updated
quite a few HP's for clients and there are updates you need to apply
first.

Yes, I followed HPs guide to updating before installing XP.

Try a clean boot. Something on your system - hardware or software - is
not working well with SP2. Are you sure the troubled system is 100%
spyware and virus-free?

It was a new system with only the HP preloaded software and updates
recomended by HP for upgrading to SP2. I have ran ad-aware just to make
sure and it says my system is clean.

Try it without the HP preloaded software if you can.

I have the same issue with an HP Pavilion a640n. (Which is pretty much the
same as the a642n but with an AMD Athlon 64 3400)

HP was absolutely no help at all, and made the comment that "SP2 is new
technology, and there may be issues with installing it on your Pavilion
desktop."

It's nice to know that I'm not alone.

I would really like to see what the fix is for this. I tried SP2 yesterday
with a HPa530n with a AMD 64bit 3200 processor with the exact same restart
issue. Once SP2 was removed, restarts were back to normal. I have tried to
find out the issue with HP and found no help there. We seem to have a common
problem with common machines.

I would also like to add that I also made sure I did all the pre-SP2 patches
from HP and that so far I cannot find any error anywhere when the PC gets
stuck in this state of semi-shutdown with a black screen and the hard drive
live remaining on.

I read through all the posts there as well as the article. It's looking more
and more that due to the fact that I have a 64bit processor, I will have to
hold off on SP2 until they come out with a 64bit SP2. Thanks for pointing me
to the article...nice to know I'm not alone :-)

If you are using a 32 bit version of the OS on say an AMD 64 bit CPU you
should be OK, but you cant expect to mix the 32 bit SP2 with a 64 bit
version of the base system

Thanks for the reply Alex!

I am using the base XP SP1 32 bit version with the AMD64. Like I stated
earlier, once I de-installed SP2, everything went back to normal, and
everything else ran great with SP2, it would just continue to hang each and
every time while doing a restart. It was like it was unable to complete the
shutdown phase of the restart. If I did a full shutdown, there was no
problem, only the restarts were affected. I will continue to search and try
again. If I can find a fix for my pc I will post the results here.
Thanks again for the replys!

Also, let me know if there is anything you would like me to post if that will
help.
Thanks

I'm curious, has anyone done an "upgrade" to XP Professional on the a640n or
the a642n? I wonder if the different kernel/installation alleviates the
issue.

Thanks,
dz

Still having this same problem and my wife's started to have it as
well. The temporary fix is to never restart the system but to do a full
shut down instead.

someone had same problem with a a530n which is the computer i have, they
wrote they were able to fix the problem by changing the power scheme from
energy star to home/office. this is posted at the hp forums. i had posted a
message on here asking those with the 64 bit processor who say they have had
no problems with the update, if they would test this theory, but none have
replied. so if someone wants to try this and then post it would help others
on here.
