SP2 and Outlook Express 6

I have just installed Windows XP SP2, and see that when I bring up Outlook
Express
it now comes up to my identity and starts downloading my email, rather than
bringing up the menu that allows us to choose a starting identity. This also
happened, as I recall, with SP1, and then was fixed at some point.

Has anyone else experienced this? What this means is that my wife has to
wait for my email to load before she can switch identities to her email. She
can stop my email from downloading, but that nice startup identity menu was
great, she could select her identity and OE6 would startup with that.

Anyone else see this? Were you able to do anything about it?

Thanks.

Phil,

This does work, when I added a password it gave me the identity menu first.
Thanks for that.

While this does provide a workaround, it would be nice not to have to type
an email password on the family computer...do you have any other suggestions?

Or anyone else?

Thanks.

Roger,

In OE, when you click 'File' > Identities > Manage Identities. Is the 'use
this identity when starting a program' checked? It should be unchecked. By
default, after reinstalling, it's checked.

You really do want a password on a family computer's E-Mail. Very often
messages in the E-Mail system will have credit card numbers or social
security numbers. Computers are stolen. Better if the E-Mail folders
are not easily accessible should that happen. This goes for Quicken, also.

Drew,

That fixed the problem...Hmmm, it's odd that installing SP2 would affect the
setings for OE6. Not intuitive, at least not for me.

Thanks for your help.

SP2 includes and installs the latest versions of Internet Explorer,
Windows Media Player, Outlook Express and DirectX, among many other things.

[The CD also has ".Net", but it's separate from SP2 itself.]

Barry,

You know, that's a good thought. It's one of those things that one doesn't
like to think about, like the SP2 installation changing settings (*smile*).

Thanks.

One further thought about this is that email is actually not hard to dig up
on a Windows computer, whether you have the OE6 password or not. At least, I
haven't had a hard time finding the mailfolders, address book file, etc. when
I've migrated from one desktop to another.

What I'm saying is that if a thief is determined, they can proabably get
what they're looking for fairly easily, password or not. Unless MS has
encrypted password-protected email, or something of that sort. That seems a
little sophisticated from what I've seen of OE6, though.

Barry,

Well, I wasn't aware that SP2 included a new IE6, but none the less, it's
hardly state-of-the art to avoid losing user settings when designing products
that will be patched or updated.

Anyways, thanks for the information, you've been very helpful.

Why don't you just have seperate user accounts?
